Akhtar began his career as an Enhanced Caseworker for Victim Support, a national charity in the UK, where he provided support and advocacy to those in distress since his twenties. As an Enhanced Caseworker, he managed caseloads of domestic abuse, bereavement, homicide, and supervision, and supported junior staff.

Akhtar continued his work in mental health for the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, which provides services across Milton Keynes and several London boroughs, including Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster.
